With what was a pretty wild week in baseball, the wildest story of recent memory involves former Red Sox first baseman Hanley Ramirez.
Ramirez, 34, and a current free agent after being released by Boston earlier this month, made headlines for all of the wrong reasons.
He is currently under investigation in connection with a drug probe. Not only could the result of this investigation affect his legacy, it could also alter teams' playoff chances come October. Non-contending teams could have signed him at the veteran's minimum hoping that he would get hot, then use him as a trade chip come July.
I understand Ramirez may not be the player he once was, but he could still provide a contender with a right-handed power-bat. With this investigation ongoing, it would be hard to imagine a team taking a chance on Ramirez not knowing what the future holds for him at this time.
